There's a scene in the movie Casablanca (1942) where the people see a plane flying overhead. In the scene the people look longingly toward the plane, as it represents the freedom of escaping from Casablanca.
Suwanna's story has an element of that very same sentiment. She told me of being on the roof of herhousein Bangkok, late and night and seeing planes flying overhead and wondering if they were flying here, and hoping some day to fly here, too. In 1988 she left Bangkok without much command of the English language.

eShe first moved to Nebraska, where she stayed with a family while she went to English as a second language class. Eventually she moved to NYC, where her brother Suwat was living and working. She got a job in a bakery where the communication barrier was a problem. Luckily for her, a regular customer named Jerry looked out for her and helped her to navigate through the early days.
