A Gently Used Hinckley
As I had un-employed myself in June, when invited by my friend Dan Nelson to join the crew on the maiden voyage of the new vessel, Doric II from Southwest Harbor, Maine to Boston, I jumped at the chance. Through Dan and C&K I had some experience sailing, and well, this was going to be a full crew. While not technically part of my trip across the country, it was nonetheless part of my adventure filled year.
Our early morning departure was hairy, with fog so thick we couldn't see much past the bow. Still, with a few of us keeping a watchful eye we made it our of the harbor and under way with much clearer skies.
I was feeling really free in those days. Sure I had no job and plans to leave the area for an undetermined amount of time, to an as of yet undetermined place. But I was free, man. Seeing the dolphins body surfing the bow wake as we made our way lifted my spirits even higher. It's one of those things that makes me laugh. I guess they're just looking to have fun.
