Ronnie and me
My first recollection of the name of Ronnie Earl was while seeing Roomful of Blues in a little tiny club in Beverly Farms, MA, soon after Ronnie joined the band in 1979. The venue, The Wayward Duck was a popular hangout for the women who attended the nearby all-female school Endicott College. Johnny and I made out way there and during the course of the evening we encountered a couple of young ladies seated by themselves. It wasn't long before one of them told me "you're wasting your time buddy, I'm Ronnie Earl's girlfriend!"
I met Ronnie for the first time at Scullers Jazz Club in Allston MA. I'd have to guess that it was around 1989 or so. I approached the band as they were seated pre-show and asked for an autograph. Ronnie agreed and asked if I wouldn't mind sending him a copy. I send him a few of my favorites, and he wrote back.
Eventually we exchanged phone numbers and continued to speak on a regular basis. Ronnie told me that he wanted me to be a part of his band, but having zero musical skills presented an obstacle. He suggested that I become the person to bring the equipment to the show, which led to me becoming the road manager. I held that position roughly from 2006 - 2014.
