Lefty Dizz
Lefty Dizz... if you ever saw him play you'd remember him. He was a showman extraordinaire. Playing with his teeth was just a starter. One handed holding his guitar out to the side. I first met Lefty Dizz when he came into the studio at WGBH to interview with Mai Cramer and the date was August 28th, 1992*. As was my habit, I'd get drink orders from the guests, which included bass woman Joan Baby, and run down the street for sodas and what not. The radio show ended at 1am, and my friends Rick Russel and his band were playing until 2am over at Ed Burke's on Mission Hill. I jumped on my motorcycle and headed over for a nightcap and to listen to the band. To my surprise when I got inside Lefty was seated at the bar He waved me over right away. "What are you drinking?". "Whatever you're having" I replied. We proceeded to put back a shot and a beer, When he got onstage to play I grabbed my camera. At the end of the night he asked me to come to his show the next night, in Hull, MA. "Here's a ticket, but not for you. Bring a pretty girl and bring your camera, I want you to take pictures" he told me. Next time I went to Chicago Blues Festival Lefty was holding court at Kingston Mines.
*I remember the date because the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrew came through the area that night. I didn't have a car, I only had the motorcycle. After drinking with Lefty beyond my limit I lost control of the bike in Kenmore Square. It wasn't bad, but I couldn't stop the bike because the pavement was wet from the storm. I swear.
