Going way back, Johnny was an anomaly. The kids I was hanging with were into Led Zepplin and Aerosmith, he was Diana Ross, James Brown, Jr. Wells. We first met in 1971, shortly before he was booted out of our boy scout troop for having a knife. They found out he had a knife after he had to be rushed to the hospital (on Nantucket) because he cut his leg... We met again in 1979 when a mutual friend brought him to work in Cambridge. Johnny was soon frequenting the Speakeasy, and I tagged along. He met Dawna Rae and things got good. We met all the great travel bands coming through because Dawna knew them all already.
Soon enough a Johnny sighting was a rarity. I kept going to the shows, typically alone. He was a big influence on me when we were young. Over time things strained, to the point where we're no longer connected. That's cool with me, and I remain forever grateful for those early days say 1979 - 1983.
